When I started reading Genesis and Job, I wasn’t looking to write a book. I was looking for answers. Life had thrown me into a whirlwind. My wife and I had just moved into a new house—an exciting but chaotic transition—and shortly after, we became parents to twins. Suddenly, the days were filled with sleepless nights, unpacked boxes, and the constant juggling act of caring for two newborns. It was beautiful, yes, but it was also overwhelming.
I found myself grappling with big questions: How do I make sense of this season of life? How do I create balance in the chaos? How do I stay grounded when so much feels uncertain? That’s when I turned to Genesis and later, Job—two books I’d read before, but never with the kind of personal urgency I was feeling at that moment.
What I didn’t expect was how much these ancient texts would resonate with the challenges I was facing. They weren’t just about the distant past—they were about how to navigate life today.
Why Genesis?
Genesis is a book of beginnings. It’s about creating structure out of chaos, finding purpose in uncertainty, and building something meaningful over time. When I read it, I couldn’t help but see parallels to what I was going through. Moving into a new home, becoming a parent—those are big beginnings, and they don’t come with an instruction manual. At times, it felt like I was standing in the middle of my own “formless and empty” earth, unsure where to start.
What struck me about Genesis is how creation unfolds gradually, step by step. Light is separated from darkness. Land emerges from the waters. Life begins to thrive. There’s no rush—it’s a process. That was exactly what I needed to hear. Genesis reminded me that it’s okay to start small, to focus on one thing at a time, and to trust that progress will come.
It also taught me the power of defining priorities. In the text, things are named and separated—day from night, land from sea—which turns the chaos into something meaningful. That same principle helped me manage the chaos in my own life. By naming what mattered most—family time, moments to recharge, and taking small, manageable steps—I was able to navigate the mess with a little more clarity and focus.
Why Job?
But life isn’t just about beginnings—it’s also about navigating hardship, and that’s where Job’s story comes in. If Genesis is about building, Job is about enduring. It’s about what happens when life doesn’t go as planned, when we face loss, uncertainty, and challenges that feel bigger than us.
Job wrestles with some of the hardest questions we all face: Why do we suffer? How do we keep going when life feels unfair? Where do we find hope when everything feels like it’s falling apart? These are questions I’d grappled with myself—moments of self-doubt, setbacks, and those times when life felt heavier than I could manage. Job doesn’t provide easy answers, but that’s what makes it so powerful. It’s a reminder that it’s okay to wrestle with hard emotions, to question, and to grieve.
What I learned from Job is that resilience isn’t about pretending everything is fine. It’s about continuing to move forward, even when life feels messy. It’s about finding hope in small ways—whether that’s leaning on the people around us, taking time to reflect, or trusting that the hard seasons won’t last forever.
Why I Wrote the Book
That’s why I wrote Practical Wisdom from the Bible: Lessons from Genesis and Job for Everyday Life. I wanted to share the lessons I’d learned in a way that felt real, relatable, and useful. These aren’t just old stories—they’re blueprints for how to navigate the complexities of modern life.
Genesis reminded me how to create structure in the chaos and embrace new beginnings. Job taught me how to hold on through hard times and find hope even in the midst of struggle. Together, these books offer timeless wisdom that’s as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago.
I wrote this book for anyone who’s navigating change, dealing with uncertainty, or just trying to find balance in the middle of life’s messiness. It’s not about theology or debate—it’s about real-life lessons you can use to move forward with clarity, resilience, and hope.
